Nenggiri

By-Election 2024

What You Need to Know

The Nenggiri State by-elections was held on August 17, 2024. It was established after the Kelantan State Assembly Speaker, Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah declared the seat vacant on June 19.

This came after its former assemblyman, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, was stripped of his Bersatu membership on June 13.

According to the Election Commission (EC), no early voting took place as all early voters opted for postal voting instead.

The 14-day campaign began from August 3 until 11.59pm on August 16.

This is the ninth by-election held after the 15th General Election in 2022, and the first by-election after the state of Kelantan’s 15th State Election in 2023.

The EC had previously stated that this by-election will see a total of 20,259 voters. The figure is further broken down as below:

The Candidates

The Nenggiri state assembly seat has been contested since 2004 and has gone through five elections so far, with four of them won by BN, and the most recent one won by Mohd Azizi.

Azizi secured a majority of 810 votes on a Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) ticket against Ab Aziz Yussof of Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 15th Kelantan State Election last year.

The Nenggiri State by-elections will see a straight fight between candidates from BN and PAS.
