KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- Every year on 3 May the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day, but 2024 has seen a record high number of journalists imprisoned worldwide.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 320 journalists were imprisoned as of 1 December 2023.
This is the second-highest number recorded by CPJ since their census began in 1992.
Israel has emerged as one of the countries that imprisons the most journalists since launching the attack on Gaza on 7 October 2023. It ranks sixth on the top 10 list. Although Israel has appeared several times in CPJ's annual census, the number of Palestinian journalists detained and imprisoned this year is the highest since the census began in 1992.
CPJ is an independent, non-profit organisation that advocates for press freedom worldwide.
