KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- Did you know that Malaysia was the first Southeast Asian (SEA) country to compete in the Paralympics?
Malaysia made its debut with four athletes at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, Germany (then West Germany). It won its first medal (a bronze) at the 1988 Games in Seoul, South Korea, and went on to win its first gold medal at Rio 2016.
As of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Malaysia ranks third in the medal tally among SEA countries with 16 medals. Thailand tops the table with 87 medals, followed by Indonesia in second place with 27 medals.
Three SEA countries have yet to win any medals in the Paralympics: Brunei, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste. For this year’s Games, Brunei will be the only SEA country not sending a contingent to compete in Paris.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will take place from August 28 until September 8, 2024. Nearly 4,400 athletes from around the world will compete in this year’s Games across 22 sporting events.
