The Ayer Kuning state by-election will be held on April 26, 2025 following the passing of its incumbent, Ishsam Shahruddin, on February 22.
Ishsam, 58, had collapsed following a friendly football match at Stadium Bandaraya in Georgetown, Penang. He was rushed to Penang General Hospital (HPP) where it was confirmed that he had passed away from a heart attack.
Since the 15th Perak State Legislative Assembly has not yet completed three years of its five-year term, a by-election is required for the Ayer Kuning seat.
Ayer Kuning (N.48) is one of the two state seats in the Tapah (P.072) parliamentary constituency, with the other being Chenderiang (N.47). The parliament seat is held by the unity government, with Datuk Seri Saravanan Murugan from Barisan Nasional (BN) serving as Member of Parliament since 2008.
Since its creation in 1986, the Ayer Kuning state seat has been held by BN-UMNO for nine consecutive terms.
As reported by Bernama on April 14, the Election Commission (EC) had issued 116 voting papers to postal voters for the Ayer Kuning state by-election.
There were 113 postal votes issued under Category 1A (election officials and police) and three for Category 1B (Malaysian nationals living abroad).
Early voting was held on April 22 with a voter turnout of 93.4 percent.
The early voting process for this by-election involved 500 police personnel and their spouses.
The 14-day campaign period runs from April 12 to 11.59pm on April 25. This is the 11th by-election held after the 15th General Election (GE15) in 2022.
This by-election will see a total of 31,897 registered voters. The figure is further broken down as below:
Incumbent Ishsam faced a five-cornered fight in the GE15 when he contested for the Ayer Kuning seat. He emerged victorious with 9,088 votes and defeated candidates from PH (Dr Mohd Nazri Hashim - 6,875 votes), Perikatan Nasional (Noor Farid Zainal - 6,812 votes), Parti Sosialis Malaysia (Bawani Kaniapan - 586 votes) and Pejuang (Maziah Salim - 105 votes).
The Perak native, who was also the Tapah UMNO chief, won with a majority of 2,213 votes.
In contrast, this year’s by-election for Ayer Kuning sees a three-cornered fight between BN-UMNO, Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).
BN-UMNO is fielding Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, 54, while PN has chosen Abd Muhaimin Malek, 44, as its candidate. Bawani, also known as Bawani KS, will once again represent PSM as its candidate for the by-election in Ayer Kuning.
